This is a deep song on many levels. Let’s begin with the title: ‘Gott Würfelt Nicht’ – ‘God Doesn’t Play Dice.’ This alludes to a difficult theological discussion. When you’re born, does God have one plan for you, and it doesn’t matter which choices you make; you can’t escape your destiny? Or, has God given you free will so you can choose your best options?
I’m not a Christian myself, but I am aware of this discussion. In my opinion, you should always live according to your virtues. Live true to yourself and help others where you can. Treat others like you would want to be treated. You can do this from the name of religion, for the sake of karma or for however you want to interpret it. Live the best life you can without causing harm to others.
The title of this song does suggest that your fate is set by the day you were born.
The refrains of the song depict another discussion. Someone is sick in bed in a hospital. At that moment, the doctors, clad in white, basically play god.
This, too, is a meaningful discussion. Are doctors playing god here? Should we accept it and let it play out as it washes over us when we fall ill? And the critical ethical questions: should we treat everyone? When is treatment still feasible and desirable? But if we do decide to pull the plug, are we or aren’t we playing god?
The line ‘Alea iacta est’ is a phrase spoken by Ceasar, indicating that events have passed a point of no return.
I would interpret this for when you have an illness, the doctors have started treatment, and then what? If you’re not getting better, or you’re getting close to the end, what then? Who throws the dice? Should you submit to the disease and give up? Or should you place your life into the hands of the doctors who will try everything in their power to save you, at whatever cost?
And then to think I merely liked this song because it held the word ‘Alea’, which is also the stage name for the lead singer of the band…
God doesn’t play dice
Embraced by machines
Animated by cannulas
Thus I find you
And play God
Today the cards will be dealt anew
Take your cards
And your sickbed
Becomes a scaffold
[The dice are marked Today death holds court Coincidence is bought God doesn’t play dice Play your cards I’ll carry you into the light Your life is forfit God doesn’t play dice]
[God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice]
Damned by arbitrariness
To eternal life
Because gods in white
Prolong your suffering
Hanged on machines
Bound by cables
And your hospital gowl
Becomes your shroud
[The dice are marked Today death holds court Coincidence is bought God doesn’t play dice Play your cards I’ll carry you into the light Your life is forfit God doesn’t play dice]
[God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice]
It’s destiny, not to die
Who tears your thread of life
Who clings you to life
Can you cheat in the last game
Who’s rolling your dice
Alea iacta est
[The dice are marked Today death holds court Coincidence is bought God doesn’t play dice Play your cards I’ll carry you into the light Your life is forfit God doesn’t play dice]
[The dice are marked Today death holds court Play your cards I’ll carry you into the light]
God doesn’t play dice God doesn’t play dice Play your cards I’ll carry you into the light Your life is forfit God doesn’t play dice]

Denn Götter in Weiß
Verlängern das Leid
Erhängt an Geräten
