The song ‘De Stad Amsterdam’ is one of my all-time favourites, ever since I heard it performed live in the early 2000s by this group, in Amsterdam actually.

There are many reasons why I love it. I love the cadence and rhythm of the song, how it increases in speed as it goes. I enjoy the lyrics too. It seems to be written about an earlier time when men, sailors or men working in the docks, were rougher and more real in a way. Mind you, the lyrics aren’t safe for work. There is some swearing in there, but it fits the song and the song’s atmosphere so well that it shouldn’t be censored.

I have a soft spot for Amsterdam too. I used to have family living there, and in earlier days, the city had a magical charm for me. It has since lost that sheen, but I still hold the city dear to my heart.

‘De Stad Amsterdam’ was written by Jacques Brel. Some even state it wasn’t actually about this city, but more likely inspired by Antwerp or Hamburg, but those names didn’t fit the song so well. It is said he wrote the lyrics in one go on a beer coaster. The original version is just as impressive as the Dutch cover is.
I like this Dutch version because the artists have a slight Amsterdam accent, making the song come out even better.

Warning: the song is set in the harbour of Amsterdam one- to two hundred years ago, and everyone knows harbour workers and sailors swear.

The video is a bit messy, but it was the best one with an audience and it does work better with an audience

De Stad Amsterdam

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeelieden lallen
Tot hun nachtmerries schallen
Over oud-Amsterdam
In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeelieden dronken
En als een wimpel zo lam
In de dokken gaan ronken

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeeman verzuipt
Vol van bier en van gram
Als de morgen ontluikt

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeeman ontwaakt
Als de warmte weer blaakt
Over Damrak en Dam

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeelieden blikken
Zilv’ren haringen pikken
Bij de staart, uit de hand

En van de hand in de tand
Smijten zij het hun knaken
Want ze zullen hem raken
Als een kat in het want

En ze stinken naar aal
In hun grofblauwe truien
En ze stinken naar uien
Daarmee doen ze hun maal

En na dat maal staan ze op
Om hun broek dicht te knopen
En dan gaan ze weer lopen
En het boert in hun krop

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeelui gaan zwieren
En de meiden versieren
Buik aan buik, lekker klam

En ze draaien hun wals
Als een wentelende zon
Op de klank dun en vals
Van een accordeon

En zo rood als een kreeft
Happen zij naar wat lucht
Als opeens met een zucht
De muziek het begeeft

En met een air van gewicht
Voeren zij dan met spijt
Weer hun Mokumse meid
Weer terug naar het licht

In de stad Amsterdam
Waar de zeelui gaan zuipen
En maar zuipen en zuipen
En dan nog maar een keer zuipen

Zuipen op het geluk
Van een hoer van de Wallen
Of een Hamburgse hoer
Nou ja, van een goed stuk

Van een slet die zichzelf
En haar deugd heeft geschonken
Voor een gulden of elf
En dan zijn ze goed dronken

En met hun wank’le lijven
Lozen zij dan hun drank
Pissen zoals ik jank
Op de ontrouw der wijven

In de stad Amsterdam
In de stad Amsterdam

In the city of Amsterdam

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor men sing
Until their nightmares will sound
like old-Amsterdam
In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor men drunk
And as a drunk as a flag
Sleep in the docks

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor drowns
Filled with beer and gram
When the morning begins

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor wakes up
When the warmth radiates again
On the Damrak and Dam

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor men eat
Nibble on silver herrings
From the tail, out of the hand

And from the hand in their mouth
Throwing away all their coins
And they will hit
Like a cat in the ropes

And they are smelling like eel
in their rough blue sweaters
And they are smelling like unions
That is what they eat for dinner

And after the dinner they rise
To buckle up their pants
And they will start to walk again
And they will burp in their heads

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the sailor men will dance
And hit on the girls
Belly to belly, nice and warm

They will turn in their waltz
Like a sun going down
On the sound, thin and out of tone
Of an accordion

And as red as a lobster
Are they gasping for breath
When suddenly with a sigh
The music stops

With the weight of the air
Are they regrettably putting
their woman from Amsterdam
Back into the light

In the city of Amsterdam
Where the seamen will drink
And drink again and again
And then drink another time

Drinking for happiness
Of a prostitute of the Wallen
Or a prostitute from Hamburg
Well, a good piece

Of a slut, who put herself
And her dignity for sale
For about eleven Guilder
And they are really drunk

And with their unstable bodies
Are they releasing their drinks
Pissing like I am crying
about the treachery of the women
